Meet the Artist | JOANNA ROGERS

In her exhibition in the Main Gallery Joanna Rogers works with textiles, found objects and photographs and with traditional surface design techniques such as hand dying, shibori, and hand weaving. Rogers has lived on Pender Island, part of the traditional lands of the Tsawout First Nation, since 1999. In her practice she draws on past academic studies as well as on new research into related contemporary issues. Rogers holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Trent University and an A.F.A in Textile Arts from Capilano University. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions in British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Washington, and in travelling exhibitions across Canada.

Art Exhibition: Hanging By A Thread: The Illusion of Permanence

to May 26. In this exhibition in the Main Gallery Joanna Rogers works with textiles, found objects and photographs and with traditional surface design techniques such as hand dying, shibori, and hand weaving. Playing with concepts of time, exploration, and experimentation, the pieces created often resemble recently unearthed artifacts from a possible future or an alternate past. Fascinated by non-verbal forms of communication Rogers often weaves stories into her work in the form of code, bringing new life and applications to those methods of communication that have fallen out of use today, such as Morse Code. Through three linked bodies of work Rogers speaks to themes of regional ecology, political inaction, and social unease, which are particularly pertinent in these times.

Art Exhibition: Stories From Skins and Skirts | ELEANOR HANNAN, JANE KENYON, JUDE NEALE, ELIZABETH DANCOES

to Apr 28. Two textile artists and two poets come together in an exhibition based on mutual appreciation, one medium sparking the other to bring about a confluence of ideas and inspiration. Stories from Skins and Skirts in the Main Gallery demonstrates the myriad ways in which the artist and writer work together. Never simply a straightforward illustration where the writer writes and the artist uses their skills to respond, this collaboration takes many subtle and unexpected forms that exemplify our interpolations of each other’s creative geographies while negotiating our current time. Through mythology, narrative, figurative exploration, and abstract expression, they find themselves revisiting themes of autonomy.

Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, April 6th, 2pm – 4pm. All are welcome!

Meet the Artists | ELEANOR HANNAN, JANE KENYON, JUDE NEALE, ELIZABETH DANCOES

Join us on Saturday, April 6th, 2pm – 4pm to meet the artists behind Stories From Skins and Skirts. All are welcome!

Eleanor Hannan and Jane Kenyon are visual artists working primarily in textiles. Jude Neale and Elizabeth Dancoes are poets whose writings have informed and inspired Hannan and Kenyon’s works. Stories from Skins and Skirts in the Main Gallery demonstrates the myriad ways in which the artist and writer work together. That all four artists are women of a certain age is not a coincidence. Decades of friendship and artistic partnership have allowed them to persevere. Through mythology, narrative, figurative exploration, and abstract expression, they find themselves revisiting themes of autonomy.

Medicinal Intentions for a Forest

Lead Artist: Lara Felsing

Lara Felsing will lead a workshop that invites participants to learn about the Medicine Wheel in Indigenous traditions and how plant medicines and making can be a gesture of care for our forests. The workshop invites the community to join Lara and stitch a personal handwritten intention for the local forests onto the Medicine Wheel blanket. The Medicine Wheel blanket was made with traditionally harvested plant-dyed second-hand fabrics and hand-stitched with remnant cotton thread. The blanket advocates for protecting all forests, and is a gesture of care and gratitude for the invaluable gifts provided by Mother Earth. The finished Medicine Wheel blanket will be exhibited in the Branching Songs Exhibition.
