Documentary Film Screening: s-yéwyáw: Awaken

Ecko Aleck of the Nlaka’pamux Nation (Lytton, BC,) Alfonso Salinas of the shíshálh Nation (Sunshine Coast, BC,) and Charlene SanJenko of Splatsin of the Secwépemc Nation (Shuswap, BC,) are learning and documenting the traditional cultural teachings and legacies of their Elders, including the impacts of genocide resulting from Canada’s Indian Residential School (IRS) system. Infused by Indigenous ceremony, s-yéwyáw: Awaken walks alongside the process of intergenerational healing.
Alfonso Salinas, Charlene Sanjenko, and director Liz Marshall will attend the screening for Q&A.

April is National Poetry Month, and this year’s theme is Weather. Wed Apr 17, 6:30-8:00 pm, Gibsons Library will hold a group reading of selected poets, each reading their own weather-related poems for up to five minutes. We invite any Sunshine Coast poet to send us one or two of their weather-related poems, by March 7th. We will let everyone know our selections on Mar 8th. Free Income Tax Clinics for Eligible Clients

Fridays to April 26. Are you eligible for a free 30 minute income tax help appointment from a volunteer?
Eligible income limits: Individual up to $45,000; Family up to $55,000 per couple, plus $2,500 for each additional dependent. Couples must provide complete tax information for both spouses. No employment expenses, self-employment income, interest income over $1000. Registration is required for in-person appointments: call the Library at 604-886-2130. Drop-off service is also available. Capilano Universe: Luis Medina on Julio Cesar Oliva’s Guitar Music

Julio Cesar Oliva, classical guitar composer and performer, is considered to be one of the greatest in the history of guitar in Mexico. Luis Medina’s lecture-recital will shed light on Oliva’s incredible life and career and offer a glimpse into his compositional output, exploring samples from his solo works to chamber music. Founder of the Vancouver Classical Guitar Festival, Luis Angel Medina (M.Mus) is an avid performer and teacher across North America. Now serving as a guitar instructor at CapU, Luis supports music students in pursuing their degrees and careers in music. Free! In person and livestreamed on Zoom. You’re invited to Come Write On for some quiet writing time here at the Library every first Thursday of the month, 3:00-5:00 pm. No instruction or critique, just quiet time and space to write.
