Make a Journal with Fire Plants

Dye and print a fabric covered journal using locally gathered and grown ‘fire plants’. Inspired by the FireSmart BC Plant Guide, we’ll explore the colour palette of a wildfire resilient landscape, testing fire-resistant plants and risky vegetation. Discover the art supplies growing in your own backyard alongside methods for waterwise natural dyeing. Perfect for those curious about natural dye and botanical printing and for anyone looking for some creative encouragement to start learning more about wildfire resilience.

All materials provided. No previous dye or sewing experience necessary, but if you have skills with patchwork you’ll be able to make a more complex design. Please only sign up if you are available for all 3 dates as you will work on the same project over the 3 sessions. When you register for Monday, August 10, you’ll be signing up for all 3 sessions. Ages 16+.

About the Facilitator: Barbara Adler is an interdisciplinary artist and performer, whose practice incorporates text, music, event making and design. The daughter and sister of Czech immigrants, Barbara now lives in xwesam/Roberts Creek. Her recent projects centre slow and process-led creation, using intricate textile objects, natural dye and botanical printing to focus work around relational time and seasonal cycles. In 2023, she joined The Only Animal (TOA) as its Artistic Director. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies and a BA in Art and Cultural Studies, both from Simon Fraser University.
