Arts Documentary – two matinees only, April 11 & 12
Since his death in 2007, the renown of Canadian painter E.J. Hughes has only continued to grow. For decades, his extraordinary works highlighting the landscapes of British Columbia have captivated the public, but his personal life is less well known. A solitary man dedicated to his art, Hughes led a fascinating life, struggling to make ends meet until a discovery of his work led to its acclaim. Having attempted to work as a fisherman during the Depression, he became a war artist during the Second World War and never gave up his passion for painting, even when devotedly caring for his ailing wife.
Join us for a two-day workshop exploring colour and design in watercolour and ink inspired by spring flowers, taking place on April 14th and April 15th, from 10am – 3pm each day.

If you’ve been wanting to begin (or rekindle) your painting journey, join me, Marlene Lowden, for a gentle, joy-filled 2 day workshop designed for beginners and anyone craving a brush-up. Together we’ll dive into experimentation, explore mark-making, and uncover the 7 elements of design—those essential building blocks that support every painting you’ll ever make. We’ll play with colour, shape, line, value, texture, and form in ways that are accessible, supportive, and fun. Most of the exercises are rooted in my abstract painting practice, but this workshop is open to those who prefer more object-based work; we are simply building your creative toolbox.
If you’re ready to get your hands seriously messy, join me for a two-day painting extravaganza inspired by the idea that great artists gather, remix, and make it their own. Across these two days, we’ll play, experiment, and make art that’s all yours, inspired by sparks you find in other artists’ work. And yes, we’ll be guided by David Bowie’s glorious wisdom: “The only art I’ll ever study is the stuff that I can steal from.”
This workshop is best for folks who have some painting experience (or who joined me for the previous weekend) —you don’t need to be a pro, just comfy enough with your materials to dive in and explore.
A dynamic, multifaceted portrait of Sunshine Coast life in the Eve Smart Gallery, sparking conversation and reflection on memory, environment, and interpretation. United by place but distinct in perspective, each artist offers a unique interpretation of the Sunshine Coast’s iconic landscapes. Eva Taylor’s vivid acrylic landscapes capture the Coast’s energy and colour, Matthew Boismier’s evocative watercolours reflect the emotional tone of the environment, and Cambria Logan’s high contrast minimalism and use of a variety of mediums lend themselves to the creation of striking sculptural works. Together, these artists invite viewers to explore how a shared subject can be transformed through three artistic lenses.
Join us for the Opening Reception on Saturday, January 17th, 2pm – 4pm!
Pulling from the artist’s lived experience with disability and difficulty, this exhibition in the Main Gallery is filled with creatures that are nuanced and strange, broken and fierce, and filled with conflicting layers that make up the whole of who they are. Mixed media sculptures, drawings, oil paintings, and collage are used to create figures evolving through time, existing in a wild place where strange beings can stretch their legs, escape, belong, or find their place in the world.
Join us for the Opening Reception on Saturday, January 17th, 2pm – 4pm. All are welcome!

In Eternal Horizons in the Main Gallery, Tiffany Blaise’s abstract landscapes depict the changing seasons of BC’s Coast, exploring the changing seasons that we go through in our own lives. In the Eve Smart Gallery, Andrea Fritz’s exhibition Lyackson Place Names features hand produced silk screen prints in the traditional style of the Coast Salish People, exploring place names and different aspects of storytelling and culture. In Joe’s Lounge, AJ Vittie’s Privileging Hope features 2D and 3D mixed media pieces that focus on nature, imagination, and hope as acts of personal activism.
Dynamic landscapes capturing the essence of BC’s coastline explore an intrinsic connection to the natural cycles of the season. In Eternal Horizons Tiffany Blaise uses layers of ink and paint, each layer built on the last, with spontaneous and intuitive brushwork to capture the spirit of the landscape. Blaise’s paintings unite the physical landscape with the world of the mind, exploring the ties between the natural world and human nature. An exhibition in the Main Gallery.

Niina Chebry’s exhibition A Change of Climate uses the iceberg as a main subject representing a range of sentiments, particularly towards climate change. As we experience more climate disruptors such as droughts, floods, fires, and extreme weather patterns, feelings of anxiety, depression, and hopelessness related to eco-anxiety rise. Through her sweeping moody compositions, capturing of weather and time changes, and variously angled micro and macro visions of icebergs, Chebry aims to generate awareness and discussion and to inspire and stir the viewer.
