Aupe Studio - Shy Watters Cedar Hat Weaver

Shy and Derek are a husband-and-wife team whose talents in cedar craftsmanship wonderfully complement one another. Shy excels in crafting woven cedar hats and various other cedar items, while Derek specializes in carving, producing everything from plaques to totem poles. Over the years, they have collaborated to create numerous exquisite artworks. Aupe Studio is situated on Shy’s ancestral lands of the shishal Nation, where Shy is a proud citizen, and Derek belongs to the xwemalhkwu Nation.

Shy is a member of shishalh (Sechelt) Nation and Kwakwaka’wakw lineage Shy weaves intricate designs and weaves patterns from her rich cultural background. Her medium is cedar. Shy has passionately weaving red and yellow for well over 25 years and continues to explore her art with tenacity and enjoyment. The innovative patterns used by Shy’s cedar hats are popular and much of her work in sought after for cultural ceremonies. Showing this year with Derek Georgeson, Homalco member wood carver.
