Art Crawl #

Born in Vancouver in 1958, John Down studied at Emily Carr College of Art & Design in Vancouver, and at the Banff Centre for the Arts. He has been engaged in the creative process since his youth. Mr. Down and his partner Joe Guiliano relocated to Halfmoon Bay in 2014 after 25 years of working in New York City.

His art is inspired by nature that surrounds their home that is built on a rock outcropping surrounded by five acres of West Coast forest overlooking the Salish Sea and Vancouver Island.

For the past three years Mr. Down has been creating drawings from Sennelier giant soft pastels and paintings on paper using acrylic and charcoal.

Art Crawl Details

“From Skyline to Treeline” is an exhibition of pastels and paintings of my internal landscapes inspired by the local natural environment. The work maps my response to the rapidly disappearing West Coast wilderness.
The paintings integrate the elements of composition, distilling three to two dimensions while harnessing the creative architectural dimension.
The works are a conversation between the life force of forest, its effect on my inner vision, and the integrity of the compositions, landmarks that capture the emotional mood of my neighbourhood forest.
