DESCRIPTION:to Aug 16th. wa shew̓áy̓ ta x̱wítl’em is the name of a new growing space in Gibsons that brings together Indigenous plants traditionally used for weaving\, cordage\, dye\, and textile practices while supporting the restoration of the pond ecosystem and surrounding habitat. This garden is a living space of cultural revitalization\, ecological care\, and intergenerational knowledge sharing rooted in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh teachings. \nAlongside the launch of this space\, this exhibition shares the work of artists whose work expresses this interconnectedness. Some are artists who have led the creation of wa shew̓áy̓ ta x̱wítl’em\, including Cease Wyss\, Jaz Whitford and Megan Dewar. Their work shares the central ethos of the garden – to be in community as a verb – to commune\, meaning-make and story-bear as a collective act of decolonial joy.

The festival will feature renowned Canadian authors such as Terry Fallis (The Marionette and The Best Laid Plans)\, Donna Morrissey (Tell It to the Water and Rage the Night)\, and Michelle Good (Eliza Sunshine and Five Little Indians). \nSome of your favourite personalities on stage have now taken to the page; also here to present their new books are Mary Walsh (This Hour Has 22 Minutes)\, Charles Demers (comedian)\, and Christopher Gaze (actor and founder of Bard on the Beach).\nThe Festival is held in Sechelt\, BC at the Rockwood Centre. \nThe open-air pavilion and surrounding garden offers a uniquely beautiful and intimate venue for the events. \nThe Festival venue also includes drink concession options including a pop-up from Strait Coffee and alcoholic/non-alcoholic soft drinks at our beverage booth\, pre-order lunch options from Gourmet Girl\, and a book tent hosted by Talewind Books. The Fair has been an annual tradition on the Coast for 38 years\, and attracts close to 5000 visitors seeking to discover the creations of artisans who are jury selected based on craftsmanship\, originality\, and the unique items they have to offer for sale. In keeping with our ongoing tradition\, the fair will coincide with the popular Festival of the Written Arts. \nThis year’s Fair will take place in the lower field of Hackett Park. We will have a large variety of artisans\, artists\, and food vendors\, as well as live music. \nThe Fair can be accessed via Medusa Street and at the corner of Trail Ave. and Dolphin St. in Sechelt.
