SUMMARY:Heritage Playhouse: Screening of 'EMERGENCE: Women in the Storm' | Sunshine Coast Climate Faire
DESCRIPTION:To wrap up the second Sunshine Coast Climate Faire\, join us for this special screening of ‘Emergence’\, followed by Q&A with filmmakers Nova Ami & Velcrow Ripper! By donation. \nClimate change is here. As heat domes\, atmospheric rivers and wildfires reshape our world\, how do we protect what matters most? EMERGENCE: Women in the Storm goes beyond the headlines to explore how women are navigating climate emergencies. \nRecent disasters\, including the wildfire that burned the town of Lytton to the ground and the devastating floods in the Fraser Valley\, are seen through the eyes of survivors\, while emergency responders and community organizers provide perspectives on preparing for – and moving beyond – the worst. Meghan Fandrich’s reflective readings from Burning Sage: Poems from the Lytton Fire\, written after losing her town to the blaze\, are woven together with stories of healing\, resilience and hope in the face of an uncertain future. \nIntimate and beautifully crafted\, the film offers insights on how to live in this new reality\, finding ways to carry on without giving up.

SUMMARY:Davis Bay Hall: Mixed Media Blackout Poetry Workshop with Tzaddi Gordon
DESCRIPTION:In this fun\, supportive class\, you will:\n– Learn to craft new meaning from old stories\n– Discover accessible\, creative techniques for transforming book pages into Blackout Poetry or micro-fiction\n– Finish at least one piece of original art\n– Gain a new mode of creative expression that you can play with almost anywhere! \nThis class is suitable for both beginners and experienced artists. It’s designed for adults\, but tweens or teens with an adult companion are welcome. \nAll supplies are included. \nTzaddi Gordon is a mixed-media artist with a rich body of found poetry work created from vintage book pages. She adores many things about vintage books: the archaic or quirky words and illustrations\, the typesetting\, and the impressions left by traditional printing presses. She takes particular pleasure in creating new meaning out of outmoded or dogmatic text and imagery.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: SC Arts Centre: Carolina Franzen & Helena Wadsley
DESCRIPTION:Helena Wadsley and Carolina Franzen\, both Sunshine Coast residents\, have adopted a diverse tradition of Walking Art into their practices. Engaged with the challenges posed by land use\, and in order to find alternative relations to the land\, their inspiration for drawings\, sculptures\, and video comes through periods of intense physical contact to the environment; be it that objects found in the landscape may be contextually sculpted so that their meaning and history remains connected with the land\, be it that a slow pace allows them to witness and to create through acts of acknowledgment and connectivity. Both artists’ drawings tread the lines of the land between natural and human-made\, and yet\, their sculptures\, found objects\, and video works have a second threshold in common: to record the walking experience while enabling the visitor to traverse with them.

SUMMARY:The Kube: April Feature Artist - Mia Dungeon 'Barbed Wire Moon'
DESCRIPTION:Mia Dungeon lived on the road and made art out of her van for several years. Navigating the ever-changing landscape\, her work is a sponge to the constant influx of vast visual stimuli innate to life on the road. The windshield of her 6’ x 12’ live/workspace on wheels served as a viewing portal that framed her transient experiences and challenges of life on the road that she translated into artwork. \nDungeon’s work grows out of the notions of housing instability\, broken bones\, grief\, world conflict and the healing that can knit it all back together. Her belief that everyone deserves housing security\, safety and stability is integral to Mia’s practice. The creation of make-shift dwellings and temporary living environments utilizing scrap material is explored through her work by repurposing used skateboards\, motorcycle tanks\, old cigar boxes and found objects as her canvases. \nMia’s solo time spent in the Mojave Desert between Joshua Tree and the West coastline of Southern California had a great impact on her work. Her paintings are infused with desert flora and fauna\, dusty motorcycle/skateboard trips\, and nights spent under the desert stars contemplating the complexities of the human experience. \nAs we transition from the year of the Wood Snake (2025) to the year of the Fire Horse (2026)\, this series titled “Barbed Wire Moon” also explores notions of shedding stagnant ideals and bursting forth with bold momentum toward social justice\, truth and freedom. \nDungeon explores how we might remain collectively resilient\, empathetic\, and move forward with a unified confidence through times of fear\, chaos and division.

SUMMARY:“Stealing Like an Artist” Painting Workshop with Marlene Lowden
DESCRIPTION:If you’re ready to get your hands seriously messy\, join me for a two-day painting extravaganza inspired by the idea that great artists gather\, remix\, and make it their own. Across these two days\, we’ll play\, experiment\, and make art that’s all yours\, inspired by sparks you find in other artists’ work. And yes\, we’ll be guided by David Bowie’s glorious wisdom: “The only art I’ll ever study is the stuff that I can steal from.” \nThis workshop is best for folks who have some painting experience (or who joined me for the previous weekend) —you don’t need to be a pro\, just comfy enough with your materials to dive in and explore.
