SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Gumboot Cafe - Art & Words/Erica Snowlake Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:to April 30th. The exhibition explores Snowlake’s evolution as a community artist\, wordsmith\, and co-founder of the Roberts Creek pier mandala. It centers on Snowlake’s belief that art is a form of meditation and revelation and highlights her signature interdisciplinary style\, where text and imagery function as “portals” for inner exploration and reflection. A central goal of the exhibition is to place these works directly into the homes of the community Erica loved so dearly and freely. Postcards from the afterlife. All proceeds from the sale of the art will fund a forthcoming catalogue of her collected works\, to be published by Temporary Utopia Press. \nA Celebration of Life will be held at the venue on Saturday\, April 4th\, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. There will be story telling\, music\, faery fanfare\, beat poetry and erotic fruits and vegetables.

SUMMARY:“Stealing Like an Artist” Painting Workshop with Marlene Lowden
DESCRIPTION:If you’re ready to get your hands seriously messy\, join me for a two-day painting extravaganza inspired by the idea that great artists gather\, remix\, and make it their own. Across these two days\, we’ll play\, experiment\, and make art that’s all yours\, inspired by sparks you find in other artists’ work. And yes\, we’ll be guided by David Bowie’s glorious wisdom: “The only art I’ll ever study is the stuff that I can steal from.” \nThis workshop is best for folks who have some painting experience (or who joined me for the previous weekend) —you don’t need to be a pro\, just comfy enough with your materials to dive in and explore.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: GPAG - CARLYN YANDLE | Joyful Making in Perilous Times
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibition in the Main Gallery\, large scale fibre art pieces connect domestic rote hand-making methods with abject materials\, issues of personal wellness\, and social engagement. Grappling with critical environmental\, political\, and social issues\, and offering possibilities for different futures\, Yandle creates her pieces over the course of months or years\, beginning as an impulse to engage the hands instead of wringing them and to gather up the lost and unwanted to achieve a new whole. Each project entangles traditional fibre art methods with stuff that is thrown away but is never gone. As each concept grows\, connections are forged with others in the gathering of materials and often in the hand-making\, making community engagement an essential part of Yandle’s art practice. It is there in the macramé tapestry composed of construction-site debris; in the sprawling\, undulating field of braided throwaway jeans; in bound sculptures of plastic fragments plucked from foreshores and landfills; and in a crocheted mass of disintegrated tarp yarded out from a forest. \nJoin us for the Opening Reception on Sat. April 4th\, 2pm – 4pm. All are welcome!
