SUMMARY:Gibsons Library: Book Club: Outspoken
DESCRIPTION:Come join our discussion of Betty Baxter’s new book! \nWhen Betty Baxter was hired to coach the Canadian women’s volleyball team in 1980\, she was met with a media frenzy as the first woman in the position. Then her career was cut short—Baxter was fired in January 1982 and tossed from volleyball at age twenty-nine because of rumours about her sexual orientation. \nThis personal memoir chronicles Baxter’s journey from a small-town prairie girl discovering her passion for sports\, through the years of international success\, including harsh coaches\, excruciating training regimes and the inequities in the sports system\, especially for a closeted gay athlete. After her abrupt dismissal\, Baxter turned to activism\, seeking equality for women\, initiating a new coaching school and working for a healthy\, visible LGBTQ+ community through the internationally recognized Gay Games. \nAll are welcome (even if you haven’t read the book!). Register below. \nRegistration required here

SUMMARY:Gibsons Library: Film Screening: The Stand
DESCRIPTION:Join us to recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day by watching a powerful documentary on Haida resistance and environmental justice. \nOn a misty morning in the fall of 1985\, a small group of Haida people blockaded a muddy dirt road on Lyell Island\, demanding the government work with Indigenous people to find a way to protect the land and the future. In a riveting feature documentary drawn from more than a hundred hours of archival footage and audio\, award-winning director Christopher Auchter (Now Is the Time) recreates the critical moment when the Haida Nation’s resolute act of vision and conscience changed the world. \nRuntime: 95 min. \nRegistration required here.
