What happens when Mathyas decides to chuck his Montreal job in advertising and pursue a pastoral life as a shepherd in Provence? For one, he learns that the transition to a more simple, pastoral life may not be as simple as he imagined. He also learns that nature, as beautiful as it is, can be hostile, cruel, and barbaric. Along with these harsh realities, he learns the skills needed to pursue his pastoral dream and forms some valuable relationships, among them with the mentors who teach him how to be a shepherd, and with Elise, a young woman bureaucrat whom he meets and who also decides to abandon her job and accompany him on his dream quest.
