Jimi Hendrix wrote 1983 … (A Merman I should turn to be) a year before his death in 1970. In this song, he imagines escaping the materialistic/ mechanical world by walking into the sea. The play 1983 is a comedy about Cameron, an ex-hippie now small-time coke dealer, who wants to commemorate Hendrix’s song by performing it at midnight in English Bay.
