In 1981 rural Ireland, a neglected young girl, Cáit (newcomer Catherine Clinch), is sent away from her dysfunctional family to live with “her mother’s people” for the summer. Slowly, in the care of a middle-aged couple she has never met, Cáit discovers a different lens through which to view the world, and a new way of living.
